Bikes and Kites

We biked to Templehof, the old airport that's now a huge park, to fly kites. Jay had as much fun with his new trick kite as the kids did with theirs. Kids ended up chasing their kites across the field after they miraculously came loose from sneaker Velcro and bike handles. (Cody found an albino ladybug too!)

One year in Berlin

Back to Bayerischer Platz, where it all started

Jasper's first German girlfriend

They will totally scheme right in front of us in little whispered German comments. It is unnerving, yet still cute.

Some pics from a bike ride going from Berlin to Rostock on the Baltic

Last weekend biking bud Jani and I biked from Berlin to the city of Rostock on the Baltic coast, about 150 miles over two days. Super interesting tour through the former GDR that featured mostly farmland, forests and small cobblestoned towns with ancient churches. Realization: there is very little industry outside of a few major towns in the former East Germany. Lots of bike trails through the countryside. And even the main roads are pretty deserted.

Picking our way through small towns in Brandenburg.

Super wierd unexplained massive concrete structures.

Wedding ceremony setup in a small park in Neuruppin.

And then it began dumping rain. Luckily there was a bus shelter two minutes after it started.

Derelict East German agriculture storehouse. Possibly the remnants of a state-run farm that was closed down after re-unification.

And then the sun came back out!

Day two - wheat fields and border poppies outside Rostock.

Day two went faster since we had a train to catch back to Berlin.

Jay waits for his body to rebel but strangely it never did. A park in Rostock shortly after arriving.

Rostock was a former member city of the Hanseatic League, so you get these interesting Hansa architecture churches here and there.

Jani doesn't smile for pictures. It is a Finnish thing I guess.

We changed clothes and pedalled around town for 45 minutes before getting on the train.
